INTRODUCTION
HENZO KENYA, is a registered Community Based Organization (CBO) that brings together cancer patients mainly for public awareness, mutual support and advocacy. Our main focus is Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) and Gastro-intestinal stromal tumors (GIST) patients, a community of about 1300, and growing, from all over the country, who are brought together by a medicine called Glivec (Imatinib) made by Novartis from Switzerland. These patients are treated in a program called Glivec International Patients assistance program (GIPAP) . Glivec is effective against these two types of rare cancer, and there are many patients who have been on it, some for over 15 years. Glivec is a very expensive medicine, a daily dose could cost more that Ksh. 7,000, which is way beyond what any Kenyan could afford and sustain as a life-long treatment. It is however made accessible to the patients free of charge through The Max Foundation, an NGO based in the USA.
OUR MISSION
Our Mission is to create awareness about CML, GIST and other Cancers, provide emotional and social support to members and other cancer patients and to do advocate for mainstreaming of issues related to cancer that affect patients and general public; with a Vision to be the hub of information, psycho social and emotional support for Cancer patients and a key advocate for the same.
